It’s no secret that getting around Burbank and the surrounding Los Angeles areas can be a bit of a challenge – especially with the influx of tourists during the summer months.  Luckily there are a multitude of tools and travel options to make getting from point A to B a little bit easier. Here are a few companies and apps that will make getting to amusement parks, restaurants, the beach, or wherever you may want to go during your stay at The Tangerine Hotel in Burbank, a bit easier.

Uber

This mobile app connects you with a driver in a matter of minutes. In Los Angeles you’ll find a variety of cars all over the city. Simply download the app, select the type of vehicle that you would like and a car we’ll be there to pick you up shortly. With Uber, you don’t need to worry about tipping, dealing with cash or credit cards because everything is directly connected to your account through the app. You can also rate your ride ensuring that you receive the best service possible. Plus, if you do a quick Google search you’ll find a variety of codes that will give you a $15-$25 discount on your first ride.

Waze

If you’re driving around Los Angeles in your own vehicle then Waze can you save you hours of time that you many have spent in traffic. This interactive, community-based traffic and navigation app will share real time road and traffic info saving you precious time and money. Get updates on high-traffic areas, roadside hazards, police vehicles and more and automatically be routed to the best route.

Lyft

Lyft is available every day of the week at all hours of the day. Based around the motto of having “a friend with a car whenever you need one,” Lyft encourages their drives to be personable and friendly, oftentimes having snacks and water in the vehicle for the ride. This app-based service allows you to get picked up by a driver in a matter of minutes. Like Uber, you can oftentimes find promo codes online for your first ride.

The Metro

The Metro offers convenient and affordable ways of getting around the city. With varying guides on their website you can see which lines you’ll need to take to get you to where you need to be, whether it be shopping, museums, arenas and more.

Super Shuttle

Super Shuttle may not help you when you’re trying to be out and about in LA but it is a convenient and affordable option when you need a ride to the nearby Burbank Airport or to LAX. Offering rides to LAX at just $20 is a price that can’t be beat.

We hope you find these tools as valuable as we have in helping to navigate the city. Of course, if you ever need a little extra help getting to where you need to be, the staff at The Tangerine Hotel in Burbank is always here to assist. Safe travels and we hope you enjoy your stay in Burbank!

But with somewhat of a revival taking place around the area in recent years, with all sorts of artists, business owners, students and tourists inhabiting its nooks and crannies, the downtown area is gaining momentum as a booming area of the city.

If you have a day or a few hours to spare during your stay in Los Angeles, mosey on down to this part of town and get lost in its eclectic coffee shops, trendy stores, eateries and unique culture. You wont be disappointed.

You’ll love the friendly ambiance and will gain a true taste of the city’s spirited and creative nature.

Or, visit the iconic Pershing Square right in the heart of downtown. Home to many community events throughout the year, you’re sure to find something that suites your fancy. From farmers markets, movies in the park and free concerts, this historical landmark has fun for all, all year long.

Burbank – Behind the City

Many people, regardless of where they call home, hear of Los Angeles, and have a general idea of its happenings and what it’s most known for. When it comes to its neighboring cities, mainly Burbank, folks may be a bit more out of the loop. Here are some fun facts about the beautiful city of Burbank. It’s close enough to the nightlife of Hollywood, the pristine beaches of Malibu and the bustling downtown Los Angeles area, yet a bit on the outskirts, allowing its residents to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet from the never-ending activity.

·        It’s located in the Eastern end of the San Fernando Valley and one of five cities in the Valley.

·        It’s named after David Burbank, a dentist and entrepreneur who purchased 4,600 acres in 1867 and eventually became known as a very successful sheep raiser.

·        Located just several miles from Hollywood, it is known as the Media Capital of the World, although it was once bustling with manufacturing and aviation in the early years.  Mogul media and entertainment companies are located in the city including: The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment andNickelodeon.

·        The popular Olive Ave, which winds its way through the heart of Burbank, was once the road early settlers traveled down to buy and sell supplies.

·        The city’s primary mall, The Burbank Town Center has been a favorite backdrop for many shows and movies.

·        Burbank’s Bob’s Big Boy is the oldest remaining Bob’s Big Boy location in America and was declared a “STATE POINT OF HISTORICAL INTEREST” by the state of California.

There is much more to the town of Burbank than what is listed here, but hopefully this gives you a feel of the robust town, nestled right outside of Los Angeles, filled with restaurants, stores and plenty of activities for every type of tourist. A large city, with a bit of a small town feel, close enough to the heart of Los Angeles, but far enough away to relax a bit. Enjoy your stay and be sure to ask our knowledgeable staff if you have any questions or concerns about the area.

Traveler’s Tips from a LA Local

Visiting the city of Los Angeles, with its bright lights and never-ending activities, can be a blast but at times a bit daunting. Here are a few tips and tricks that are sure to make your stay much more enjoyable.

  • Battling Traffic

This terrifying word is no secret and yet so many people find themselves fighting it on a constant basis. Leaving just 20 minutes earlier, or later, could make a world of difference in making your day a lot less stressful. Peak times are generally from 6am – 8am and 3pm – 7pm but it depends on the freeways and the specific route you’re taking. Ask your hotel concierge for assistance, check Google Maps for the congested routes prior to leaving your hotel, or download a commuter friendly app such as Waze.

  • Getting Around

Getting around in a foreign area, let alone in one of the busiest cities in the U.S., can be completely frustrating.  Try the new premium transportation services like Uber or Lyft. You can download these apps on your smart phone for easy access and many times they’ll give you a significant discount (or even a free ride) for joining. The vehicles are generally much nicer than taxis, the drivers are encouraged to express their unique personality, and many will provide tourists with an insider’s scoop of the city.

  • Saving a Pretty Penny

Between the many theme parks, trendy dinners and must-see shows the dent in your pocket book can grow quickly. Take advantage of the many FREE options available in the Los Angeles and Burbank areas. You’ll find a plethora of beautiful parks, hiking trails and gorgeous beaches just miles from you. Griffith Park, Runyon Canyon and Zuma Beach are just a few of the beautiful outdoor sites available for you to enjoy. For health fanatics, the Los Angeles area is home to many fitness centers and unique yoga studios as well. Many offer a free or discounted class for first time attendees.

  • Saving a Pretty Penny Part 2

There are many amazing restaurants in Burbank and the surrounding areas but many fine dining options come at a hefty price. Ask your concierge or look online and you’ll find a variety of restaurant deals on Yelp, Groupon and Living Social. Farmers’ markets are another great way to experience local food, jewelry and crafts. These take place in various locations throughout Los Angeles on all days of the week.

  • Research

In a city that is constantly moving and changing even a local can get overwhelmed from time-to-time. When it comes to finding the best activities or restaurants, lucky for us, there are plenty of apps, websites, and bloggers who make it their job to be up-to-date on the latest and greatest of what Los Angeles has to offer. Take some time to read up on the area – read blogs, read reviews, read the latest articles. They generally offer some valuable, and genuine, words of wisdom to steer you in the right direction.

Always remember, whatever you are interested in seeing and doing, our friendly and knowledgeable hotel staff are here to assist in making your stay as enjoyable as possible.

She also produces the stage show Expressing Motherhood and started a non-profit in memory and honor of her mother who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2009. Choosing only 5 restaurants to recommend in Burbank is no easy task. Burbank offers a very wide array of amazing eats and experiences from Friday nights at Bob’s Big Boy on the Toluca Lake side of the city to Granville in Downtown Burbank and all the way up to the top of the hill at The Castaway, who’s view while dining cannot be beat. When it comes to food, I’m always in, but favorite places for me are more than just about the food. Atmosphere and customer service play a huge part in my choices for this list. Although those three places listed above would be on my honorable mention list, I’d love to share with you the five places I would recommend you give a try while visiting our beloved Burbank.

Flavor Of India – One of the amazing things about Southern California is the wide assortment of worldly flavors you can find within minutes. Burbank holds many locally owned restaurants with tastes from around the world in our small city and one of my favorites is Flavor Of India located in the heart of Downtown Burbank. I’ve never tasted a more rich, authentic flavor of Indian food, than I have at this place, and it’s right here in our city! The naan, tandoori, saag paneer and fresh made cilantro and cumin salad dressing are simply delicious. However, my absolute favorite dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala. The dishes at this restaurant are all original creations by two brothers who refuse to use artificial coloring or added preservatives in their recipes. They sport a fresh delicious buffet for lunch daily, but don’t be scared of the word buffet here, this is not your typical buffet. It’s all made fresh and in small batches for the best quality. The atmosphere in this place is very inviting and the customer service is also attentive. I highly recommend!

Momotaro – This family owned Japanese restaurant in Burbank is one of my kids’ favorite places to go. They have a very wide variety menu with sashimi, hand rolls and cut rolls. When it comes to sushi, whether you’re a pro or trying for the first time, it helps to have a place you can trust for the freshest options available. I’ve tried many in Burbank, but we keep going back to Momotaro again and again. Even if sushi is not your thing, give the Chicken or Steak Teriyaki a try, or the handful of other vegetarian or fully cooked options available. If you love sushi, try Momotaro in Burbank for the fresh, clean taste and pop in for their happy hour Monday-Friday 3:00pm-5:30pm. Although we love the food, my favorite thing about this restaurant is the customer service. It’s the kind of service that has us coming back over and over. I have rarely had to wait long for a table, the food comes fast and the staff is very helpful, especially when bringing three children in who want to learn how to use chopsticks.

Romancing The Bean – Don’t let the name of this cafe fool you into thinking it’s just another coffee house. Sitting right in the middle of our our beautiful Magnolia Park, Romancing The Bean’s quaint quarters offers a beautiful atmosphere, delicious dishes constructed by trained chef and owner Kerry Krull…and of course an amazing cup o’ joe. The top selling plate at this restaurant is the Kale and Brussels Sprouts Salad, but my favorite would be the quiche and a side of one of the fresh ‘made daily’ soups! Currently there are three chefs crafting the menu at this romantic style eatery with menu changes every three months fitting perfectly into whatever season we’re currently in. They use only the freshest, organic and most locally grown ingredients they can find, only adding to my love for them. This community voted award winner is simply a must, while enjoying our town.

The Smokehouse – This historic dining experience simply is mandatory while staying in, playing in or driving through Burbank. Established in 1946, it sits next to the Warner Brothers Lot and serves as a favorite hangout for many people in the entertainment industry. Once frequented by the likes of Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, The Smokehouse is best known in my circle of friends for its amazing garlic cheese bread, actually listed on their menu as ‘The World’s Greatest.’ The low lighting and chill atmosphere help draw you in to enjoy one of their many popular dishes ranging from Classic Salads, Chicken Picatta and Signature Steaks to Lobster Tail and Prime Rib. This restaurant has a lot of options to choose from. The menu is large and surely has something for everyone, but if you’re in a hurry, don’t waste your time. This dining experience is meant to be fully enjoyed while relaxed. If you can’t make it during the week, then try their Sunday Brunch!

Dino’s Pizza – You are reading this right. I am recommending a Pizza Place as probably my favorite eatery in our beautiful city. They do pizza right, but not just pizza. They create gourmet salads like the Classic Arugula, to pair, using only local greens and the freshest vegetables. The menu sports a basic Italian listing of options, but I’ll tell you, there’s nothing basic about it. The crust on a pizza makes it or breaks it and Dino’s has it mastered. They make the pizza sauce daily and it adds to what I think is the most delicious pizza in not just Burbank, but in all of Los Angeles. I would also recommend trying the spaghetti, any of the sandwiches and do not leave without ordering yourself garlic cheese bread.
